I'm so sorry. by toxicfur (4.00 / 2) #1 Sun Mar 09, 2008 at 01:34:23 PM EST
That's incredibly sad. One of the first stories ana told me about you involved Rosa and the sound of her claws as they clicked on the floor in the middle of the night. Take care of yourselves.

Fifteen is a good run for a bigger dog. by ammoniacal (2.00 / 0) #10 Sun Mar 09, 2008 at 04:18:59 PM EST
Rosa was loved and that's what really mattered.

A very good run by johnny (4.00 / 1) #13 Sun Mar 09, 2008 at 06:51:03 PM EST
She was a black Lab, a large breed. But she was of the English stock, which runs smaller, and she was the runt of her litter. She was pretty tiny as far as Labs go.

She kept our family intact through some very rough times. I don't know if we would have made it without her.

Although she had been failing lately, the real immediate, "this is it" decline only lasted two days. For the last two weeks I've been sleeping downstairs on the couch to be next to her, since she  was finding it harder and harder to make it all night without peeing, and was just freaking out and having separation anxiety. But it wasn't until Friday that she basically collapsed. Saturday she could only stand when I took all her weight. I'll spare you the final details, but she was essentially gone by this time yesterday, although she continued breathing all night.

Not looking forward to telling my daughters (off at colleges).

Sadness. by nightflameblue (4.00 / 1) #14 Mon Mar 10, 2008 at 12:44:08 PM EST
Having put a sixteen year old kitty down last fall/winter, I know how hard it is to watch that final decline in a pet. It's odd how quickly they can go.

But it sounds like she had a good long run, and now she can be running around anytime she wants wherever it is puppy spirits end up. I find it hard to accept that any creature with that much joy and good-naturedness in them wouldn't go on in some way.

My condolences. I'll hug my two labs extra tight when I get home tonight.
