It's pretty stupid to rob a bank on Martha's Vineyard, since the only way to get off the island is by boat or airplane, and the harbors and airports are pretty easy to watch.
There have been two murders in the 15 years I've lived here. Both were done by off-islanders who came in the summer to sell drugs.
A few years ago the police put an item on the warrant to buy new guns, saying theirs were ancient. So we had a big debate about it at town meeting. Turns out that no cop on the island had discharged a weapon in the course of duty for more than fifty years. We voted down the request.
A few years ago a State Trooper who was stationed here got drunk and put a few rounds into the house of a local petty criminal and drug dealer that he'd been trying to bust for about 3 years. The local cops had to arrest him, and evidently that was pretty tense -- a drunk and heavily armed Statie being arrested by a bunch of locals. But that worked out OK.Buy my books, dammit![ Parent ]
